Well, 6 months later …. IRD staff at the contact centre know nothing about the DTA – I was told the other day that my super would be taxed in Australia AND NZ. The person with whom I spoke referred my enquiry to a ‘technical expert’ and I am still waiting for that person to call me!

Good News!
Everything done, dusted, signed and completed.
Both countries have put legal effect to the document, and given each other notice of the fact.

Changes will take effect from April 1st, and withholding rates will be changed on May 1st.

I read on the Australian Parliament website yesterday that the Aussie side of the legislation has been signed off by the Governor General.

The New Zealand Government has begun the ratification process. All that is left is for New Zealand to complete it, Australia to begin its own, and the post-signing two month waiting period to expire.

Theoretically this could happen by the end of 2010.
Though no one is giving an “official” timeline.
NZ-Australia DTA One Step Closer

As an Australian living and working in NZ the proposed DTA will save me a fortune in tax if I remain in NZ after I claim my Aussie Super. I am keen to find out when the DTA will be ratified as I want to retire in the next few months
