Tsunami Spurns Charity Tax Reminder

Prompted by an influx of donations for the Samoa tsunami relief, the IRD has reiterated their policy regarding donations.

Robert Russell, Commissioner of Inland Revenue, has made statements reminding those making donations to tsunami stricken Samoa that they could be eligible for a tax refund. Robert Russell believes that many of those who are making donations are unaware that they are able to claim a refund on their donation.

Further, it was emphasized that there is no longer an upper limit on the amount that can be claimed back from a tax donation. As long as the donation is lower than the individual’s annual taxable income and above $5, they would be able to claim a third of the amount donated, if receipts are kept.

IRD Gives Helping Hand

The Inland Revenue Department has released information on the compliance areas it will be focusing on this year.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has released what it has titled “Helping You Get it Right: Inland Revenue’s compliance focus 2009-10”. This document, claimed by the IRD to be the first of its nature for the IRD, is aimed at creating a more transparent atmosphere for tax payers, in regards to compliance.

The Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Robert Russell has stated that while most tax payers are compliant with regulations, some still struggle, for whatever reasons. In the current economic downturn, with its subsequent extra pressures, this document is aimed at providing people with extra assistance.
